How to Hike for Beginners Part(1 of 2)

Check the Weather Before Leaving
Weather can change the difficulty and safety of a trail. Check the forecast for the specific area
you plan to visit, not only your hometown. Conditions may be cooler, windier, or wetter at higher
elevations.
Avoid your first hike during severe heat, thunderstorms, heavy rain, snow, or strong winds. Rain
can make rocks and roots slippery, while extreme heat may increase the risk of dehydration and
heat illness.
Even when the forecast looks favorable, pack a lightweight rain jacket or an extra layer. Outdoor
conditions can shift quickly, and being prepared will help you stay comfortable.
Wear Comfortable Hiking Footwear
You do not always need heavy hiking boots for an easy beginner trail. Supportive athletic shoes
or trail shoes may work well on smooth, dry paths. For rocky, muddy, or uneven terrain, hiking
shoes or boots with good traction and ankle support may be more appropriate.
Your footwear should fit comfortably and should not pinch, rub, or slide. Avoid wearing
brand-new shoes on a long hike. Wear them on shorter walks first so you can make sure they fit
properly.
Choose moisture-managing socks rather than thin everyday socks. Well-fitting socks can reduce
friction and help prevent blisters. Packing an extra pair is helpful if your feet become wet.
Dress in Comfortable Layers
Layered clothing allows you to adjust as the temperature changes. You may feel cool when you
begin, warmer while climbing, and chilly again when you stop to rest.
A simple hiking outfit may include a lightweight base layer, a comfortable shirt, hiking pants or
shorts, and a jacket. In cooler weather, add an insulating layer such as a fleece.
Choose fabrics that dry quickly and allow you to move comfortably. Cotton can hold moisture
and may become uncomfortable in cool or wet conditions. A hat can provide sun protection,
while gloves and a warm hat may be necessary during colder seasons.
Bring sunglasses and apply sunscreen to exposed skin, even on cloudy days.
Pack the Basic Essentials
Beginners do not need to carry a large backpack filled with complicated equipment. A small
daypack can hold the essentials for a short hike.
Bring enough water for the entire outing, plus a little extra. Carry simple snacks such as fruit,
trail mix, crackers, energy bars, or sandwiches. Even a short hike can increase your appetite.

Other useful items include a trail map, fully charged phone, portable charger, small first-aid kit,
flashlight or headlamp, whistle, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain protection, and personal
medications.
A small trash bag is useful for carrying out wrappers, tissues, or other waste. Keep your pack
light, but do not leave behind important safety items simply to save space.
Tell Someone Where You Are Going
Before leaving, tell a trusted person where you plan to hike, which trail you selected, when you
are starting, and when you expect to return.
This simple step can make a major difference if you become lost, injured, or delayed. Let your
contact know when you finish the hike safely.
Beginners may also feel more comfortable hiking with a friend or family member. A hiking
companion provides company and another person to help if a problem occurs.
Learn How to Follow Trail Markers
Many trails use colored paint marks, signs, posts, or symbols to guide hikers. Learn what the
trail markers look like before you begin and check for them regularly while walking.
Take a photograph of the trail map at the entrance, even if you have a printed copy. Download
an offline map if you are using a hiking or navigation application, since cellular service may be
limited.
Pay attention at every trail intersection. Stop and confirm the correct direction instead of
automatically following the widest path. Look behind you occasionally so you recognize the
route from the opposite direction when returning.
If you become uncertain about your location, stop. Check your map, look for the last marker you
saw, and avoid continuing farther into an unfamiliar area.
